Summary

Strengths - Research on the number, characteristics and situation of people with disabilities has a clear social consensus because basic information about the situation of people with disabilities is essential for social policy planning and programs aimed at meeting the services needs for the disabled. A new Law on Autonomy and Dependency request a response to a social challenge. - EDAD 2008 started taking advantage from the previous experience of the Survey on Disabilities, Impairments and State of Health, 1999, to get homogenized information on the current social and demographic conditions, following the philosophy of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Weaknesses - In spite of these positive bases, EDAD 2008 still lacks comparability with other former surveys on disabilities, the Survey on Disabilities, Impairment and Handicaps 1986 and the Survey on Disabilities Survey on Disabilities, Impairments and Health Status 1999.

Aggregated and elaborated tables plus raw anonymised microdata Three microdata files on Household Questionnaire are available for general use: household data, people with disabilities data (including data from caregivers if any), and children with limitations data (and their primary caregivers if any). Data on the Institutions Questionnaire are only refer to those people living in an institution.

For those institutionalised, information on the centres' size (number of positions or beds in the case of hospitals) and ownership, public or private, was included. Individuals living in centres were classified as in the case of those non-institutionalised.

Linkage

Standardisation
EDAD 2008 follows the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to define disability and dysfunctions. Classifications on occupations and professions are homogenized according to the INE standards valid in Spain.

Timeliness, transparency
Data for non-institutionalised population were collected between November 2007 and February 2008, and for those living in centres from May to July 2008. A preview of the data was released in November 2008. The final dataset was released in October 2009.
