By derogation from the statistical confidentiality, data from statistical registers can be made available for research purposes. Data may be released after application and secrecy examination. Since 1 January 2004, research involving humans is examined by the Ethical Review Board. Access only available for Swedish scholars.

The social insurance registry is a collection of more than 25 registries with regard to general person information, sick-leave insurance registry (including parental leave, rehabilitation, activity support, etc.), allowances registry, occupational injury registry, disability support registry, sickness allowances and activity support registry, pension related registries and registries of survivors.
