Longitudinal integration database for health insurance and labour market studies (LISA)
Longitudinell integrationsdatabas för sjukförsäkrings - och arbetsmarknadsstudier (LISA)
Summary
Strengths LISA is a combination of various data sets. Good opportunities to combine with other datasets. The vast majority of LISA built around data that has its source in the administrative system - primarily created for administrative purposes. That data is not created in order to provide a statistical basis means that objects and variables can change values, disappear, or get to, but we can affect this. Regulations and administrative procedures are usually outside SCB's Using LISA database, it is possible to produce statistics on education, labor and persons who are outside the labor market. LISA is tailored to provide statistics for the interfaces "Education-labor", "labor-inactive" and "labor-income" and the sick-leave field. In the future it is planned to also accrual data on health insurance area shall be obtained from the Social Insurance Agency. It is widely used not only for research, but also for policy development and evaluation both at national, regional and sectoral levels. The database is aimed at a very wide application and provide a common base for many different users. It improves conditions for statistics, research, investigation and evaluation in health insurance and the labor market that requires data that follows individuals over time. Through its comprehensive features, the database is the basis for regional statistics and planning. The database provides new aspects of regional and local level in terms of social change, its effects on the social income and sick the extent and example on unemployment's geographic distribution and its effects on individual health. The database is also used to supplement the survey data with additional information.

Conditions of access
Access for national agencies. Researchers can gain access to anonymised material (microdata) in accordance with applicable privacy and the desired database format.
Retrievals form LISA be in aggregate for as statistical retrievals or as anonymised object data for further appropriation. It is presumed in the latter case that the material shall be used for research or statistical ends. In most cases a special ethical screening is conducted in order to gain access to data for research purposes. See http://www.forskningsetikprovning.se/. A secrecy clearance by Statistics Sweden is conducted for every release of object data.
Type of available data (e.g. anonymised microdata, aggregated tables, etc.)
Anonymised microdata, aggregated tables. MONA-system.If there are special reasons, it is also possible to access the data as an Access Database on CD. The user controls the data from Access data base to Excel via MS Query and PivotTable and can itself create tables as desired.
Formats available
The LISA database is housed in an SQL database. The information can be linked, when needed, to separate data files and updated with information from other registers at Statistics Sweden. Data files can be delivered in SPSS, SAS, ACCESS, EXCEL or ASCII format according to customer specifications.
Coverage
Coverage Years of collection, reference years, and sample sizes
During 2004, the longitudinal database LOUISE was extended and renamed LISA. Aside from Statistics Sweden, the Social Insurance Agency and the Swedish Agency for Innovative Systems partook in the construction work. The Social Insurance Agency is a continued cooperative partner in the further development and documentation of the database. The database presently holds annual registers since 1990 and includes all individuals 16 years of age and older that were registered in Sweden as of December 31 for each year. The database integrates existing data from the labour market, educational and social sectors and is updated each year with a new annual register. The individual is the primary object in LISA, but connections to family, companies and places of employment are also available. There are special retrieval tables for companies and places of employment with descriptive data about the object.
First year of collection
1990
Stratification if applicable
Age, sex, income – a broad set of variables and possibilities of stratification etc.
Base used for sampling
Geographical coverage and breakdowns
Total population of 16 years of age or more for the entire country.
Age range
Aged 16 and over.
Statistical representativeness
Population representative
Coverage of main and cross-cutting topics
The database gives a basis for longitudinal statistics and research about entire populations or groups therein or geographic areas, and about relations gainful employment and alternative employments (studies, parental leave, unemployment, labour market activities, etc.) as well as gainful employment and illness.
