Data was first collected in 1964 and the examination has been repeated several times since. In 1964, the sample consisted of men and women born in 1914 living in the municipalities around the hospital of Glostrup (n = 975).

The purpose of the database is to monitor lifestyle choices and how they affect the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Since 1984, this has been changed to a general focus on the epidemiology of ageing. It covers many different health-related measures such as height, weight, information about chronic diseases, which includes cardiovascular diseases and risk factors. Furthermore, the study includes different socio-demographic measures and information about social conditions.
