Health Barometer 1995-2011

Summary

The Health Barometer aims (i) to obtain information on the perception of the citizens of the public health system and the impact of measures related to public health policies, (ii) to analyse the knowledge and attitudes of citizens about health problems, and (iii) to know the degree of penetration of information campaigns, and the temporal evolution of those aspects already surveyed in previous editions. Its main strength is to follow, in a temporary approach (now through a 17-year period), the Spanish population opinion on health issues as one of the most important dimensions of people’s wellbeing. Among the more outstanding drawbacks, it should be highlighted that the Health Barometer it is not a longitudinal tool to follow the same individuals' opinions along the rounds and that the number of data searched for is variable, not allowing stable analysis of data across time.

The 2011 Health Barometer, covering 7,800 interviews (7,757 interviews completed in three subsamples - 2,587, 2,580 and 2,590), is a multi-stage, stratified, random sample (municipalities, census tracts, individuals by age and sex). For individual studies (every singular wave), the samples are representative for obtaining data at the national level, and not by autonomous community (region) as results by region are lacking statistical representativeness. In the case of annual totals (joint singular waves), there are some autonomous communities that have sufficient sample data to offer valid results. Details of these individual and total samples are highlighted in the technical documents. The questionnaire, between 60 and 70 questions, is composed of fixed (around 70%) and situational questions (about 30%), which are of temporary interest. The research variables are the citizens’ opinions on the Spanish public health system and their satisfaction with the quality of the different levels of the public health services. Other variables are defined for classification, such as levels of satisfaction with the public health system operations; waiting list for doctor consultations and for surgical interventions; or social and personal features – political beliefs, household income, highest level of education completed, employment situation, last job or occupation, and socioeconomic status. A fixed set of topics and variables ensures the continuity of this survey along this period, but there is a changing number of other variables not allowing continuity for the social analysis of health behaviour.

Timeliness, transparency
Data have been collected in three subsamples (February-March, June-July, October-November) each year. Data dissemination is scheduled for the end of June of the year after after collection.
